FRANKLIN — Calling it both a humbling experience and an honor, Sloan Henderson was excited to learn she had been selected as NASCAR’s recipient of the 2010 Wendell Scott Trail Blazer award.

The annual award, named after former NASCAR driver Wendell Scott, goes to a female or minority driver in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series who personifies excellence both on and off the race track.

Scott made his first NASCAR stock car start on March 4, 1961 and was recognized posthumously for his feat at Atlanta Motor Speedway this season. Scott became the first African-American race driver to win a NASCAR event on Dec. 1, 1963 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Henderson, 18, who has long sought to become the first female race driver to win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event, will receive the award on Dec. 12 at the NWAAS awards banquet at the Crown Ballroom at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C. She will be one of three award winners who will give a speech at the banquet.

“You can no longer advance your racing career just by turning left,” Henderson laughed. “I’ve been working on the media relations and marketing part of this sport, and giving this speech will just be another part of that. I’ll be speaking to a whole group of other champions in the audience, so I don’t have to worry about them not knowing what I’m talking about.”

Racing primarily at Kil-Kare Raceway in Xenia, and Columbus Motor Speedway, Henderson claimed 20 top-five finishes, two feature wins and set two track records during the 2010 season.

She placed third overall in Ohio and was 97th out of the top 500 Whelens Series drivers in the country.

“The winner is determined based on submitted nominations and finishing position in the Top 500 of the Division I NWAAS national points,” NASCAR spokesperson Lauren Wescoat said in a statement. “Sloan was the highest finishing female driver in the NWAAS Division I national points standings.”

On Sunday, Henderson learned she’d been invited to potentially drive in NASCAR’s Grand-Am road racing series next season.

“We’ve been looking into the possibility of racing in the NASCAR Truck Series or maybe in the ARCA stock cars, but I’ve got to look into the road course racing. I haven’t done very much of that so far, so that might be fun.”

Road Course Brings Out the Best in Phoenix Racing

Spartanburg, S.C. (August 3, 2010) - Phoenix Racing and the No. 09 Phoenix Construction Chevrolet will head north to the 2.45-mile, 11-turn road course at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International Raceway this weekend for Sunday’s Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen.  Phoenix Racing and Bobby Labonte will be making their fourth start together this season.  The Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen is the second road course stop for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

This race will be only the second time Phoenix Racing has been to Watkins Glen.  But, with a strong 12th-place finish at Sonoma in June with driver Jan Magnussen, Phoenix Racing and Labonte feel confident in their chances of having a strong performance.

Bobby Labonte has 17 starts, one pole, two top-five and six top-10 finishes with an average starting and finishing position of 18th at Watkins Glen International.

Comments from Bobby Labonte on Watkins Glen International and Safety Improvements at the track:

“I have a lot of confidence going into this weekend.  James Finch and the No. 09 team had a solid finish at Sonoma earlier this year.  I had a strong run going as well, but just got caught in some bad luck at the end.  Hopefully all that bad luck is behind us and we’ll be able to put everything together for a solid run.

“Watkins Glen is a fast, fast road course with high speed corners.  There are two to three good passing points on the course and the rest is driver finesse.  It’s been really hard to pass here in the past, but with these new run-offs I think you will see more passing going on.  It’s a lot different than Sonoma, but I think a lot of guys like the higher speeds here.

“There have been a lot of changes to this track since we were there last year too.  A couple areas have been paved with run-off areas and safer barriers added.  It’s always nice to see where tracks have made safety improvements.  It’s something we always need to be in front of.

“I was involved in a pretty bad wreck there a couple years ago (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAoRcIXQHgo).  It was a hard hit for a few us.  So, I’m glad that some changes have been made to improve the safety.  After the scary crash last weekend at Pocono with Elliot Sadler, it’s very important that our sport is making changes for the driver’s safety.  We’ve come a long way, but it’s always best to keep moving forward too.”
